Cellan is an expanding village, situated on the banks of the river Teifi, approximately 2.5 miles from the market and University town of Lampeter, on the B4343, and has a population of some 500 people.
Like all villages, Cellan has its place in history; the Norman church of All Saints, with its stone font, hills, which still bear the remains of Bronze Age barrows and standing stones, and an Iron Age hill fort are just some examples.
Farming continues to play a major role in this rural community but its residents come from all walks of life.
However, over the last 30 years Cellan has seen many changes, some of which have been detrimental to community life with the closure of the village school in 1976 and the village shop/post office in 1984. This meant that the only remaining public meeting places were the church, the two chapels and the local pub.
Then in 2001 Cellan gained its first purpose built community centre, accessible to all, when Cellan Millennium Hall was built on Maesymeillion playing field, spearheaded by the Cellan Village Improvement Society Committee. This facility has proved to be an invaluable asset to the local and wider community and is used by all age groups for a variety of recreational, educational and leisure purposes.
Since that time a children’s play area and, more recently, our community garden have been added. Further developments are in the pipeline, so watch this space!
